Then let us invite you to go shopping! Modify Values Please take a moment to learn what we mean by the terms green, fair trade, and fair labor. Green Green is not a term we use lightly. We use high standards in evaluating the environmental impact of all the merchandise we choose to carry. In searching for items that offer both style and value, we select those made with green materials, such as bamboo, organic cotton, and recycled fibers. Green processes—energy efficient and low impact production, product efficiency, effective waste management, recycling, investment in renewable energy, and using carbon offsets—are also followed in the production of our merchandise. Fair Trade Fair Trade refers to our policy of buying merchandise made in the USA or otherwise fairly traded. The Fair Trade Federation defines Fair Trade as ” …a trading partnership based on dialogue, transparency, and respect that seeks greater equity in international trade. It contributes to sustainable development by offering better trading conditions to, and securing the rights of, marginalized producers and workers—especially in the South. Fair trade organizations are engaged actively in supporting producers, raising awareness, and in campaigning for changes in the rules and practice of conventional international trade.” Key principles of Fair Trade include:
Fair Labor Fair Labor is another criterion of Fair Trade. By carrying merchandise made in the USA or fairly traded products, we are able to certify the existence of fair wages and safe working conditions for the producers and artisans supplying and developing our merchandise. The Fair Labor Association (“FLA”) has developed a workplace code of conduct to begin a global monitoring process that ensures fair labor practices to all workers. The FLA Code of Conduct monitors the following labor issues:
Eco-Chic Fabrics and Materials We are pleased to introduce you to the finest eco-chic fabrics and materials:
ACQ Pressure Treated Lumber By using ACQ treated lumber products instead of other materials like plastic or steel, you are aiding in the fight against global warming. The use of ACQ pressure-treated wood—instead of steel, concrete, or plastic—saves as much as 32 million barrels of petroleum each year—enough to drive one million cars around the world. In North America each year, using pressure-treated wood saves as many as 226,000,000 trees from being harvested. That's enough lumber to build 435,000 homes. ACQ recyclable lumber is a recyclable product. Once taken out of service, ACQ treated lumber can be reused as landscaping, garden edging, steps, and many other popular projects. Bamboo Bamboo is one of the fastest growing plants in the world! The bamboo plant does not require the use of dangerous pesticides or herbicides to thrive. Additionally, bamboo fibers are 100% biodegradable. An ideal green-friendly fabric, bamboo is soft, sumptuous and insulating. Not only is bamboo clothing comfortable and luxurious, the fabric keeps you cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Another benefit to bamboo is its natural antibacterial quality, which enables bamboo clothing to remain fresh and new longer. Bamboo is also hypoallergenic! Ethical Cashmere Ethical cashmere is a luxurious, natural fiber that provides warmth and comfort without bulk. Comprised of the finest fibers gathered from the underbelly, shoulder or neck of the cashmere goat, ethical cashmere is taken from the animal with a comb in a humane way that aids in the goats’ natural shedding process! FSC Certified Wood fscus.org Landowners and companies that sell timber or forest products seek certification as a way to verify to consumers that they have practiced forestry consistent with FSC standards. Independent, certification organizations are accredited by FSC to carry out assessments of forest management to determine if standards have been met. These certifiers also verify that companies claiming to sell FSC certified products have tracked their supply back to FSC certified sources. This chain of custody certification assures that consumers can trust the FSC label. Trusted environmental organizations including Greenpeace, National Wildlife Federation, The Nature Conservancy, Sierra Club, and World Wildlife Fund all support and encourage FSC certification. Consumers wishing to support healthy forests and communities should look and ask for the FSC label when purchasing wood or paper products. Hemp Hemp, an all-natural fiber that has been used in clothing for thousands of years, leaves one of the lowest ecological footprints of any fiber. Not only do hemp plants grow quickly, but also they can be grown free of chemical pesticides. This highly durable fabric is warmer than cotton and non-irritating to the skin. Ingeo™ Ingeo™ is made from 100% annually renewable resources like corn that can be easily and efficiently reproduced. The corn is put through a simple, efficient, low environmental impact process that creates fiber. Ingeo™ has the ability to be composted and chemically recycled. Under the right conditions, therefore, the lifecycles of production, consumption, disposal and reuse are completed and neatly closed. Like other synthetic fibers, Ingeo™ offers a number of advantages over natural fibers: high strength, stability, and high resilience. It is also more hydrophilic (or water-loving) than common polyester fibers. When blended with cotton and wool, Ingeo™ produces lighter garments that wick moisture away from the skin. Low VOC Paint According to the EPA, indoor air is three times more polluted than outdoor air. Paints and finishes are among the leading causes of indoor pollutants. Paints and finishes release low-level toxic emissions into the air for years after application. The sources of these toxins include a variety of VOC’s (Volatile Organic Compounds). Low VOC paint is good for you and good for the environment. Low VOC paints, stains and varnishes use water as a carrier instead of petroleum-based solvents. Therefore, the levels of harmful emissions are lower than solvent-borne surface coatings. Low VOC coatings also contain no, or very low, levels of heavy metals and formaldehyde. Modal Modal is a bio-based fiber made from beech trees. It is similar to cotton yet it does not fibrillate or pill and is resistant to shrinkage and fading. An emerging eco-fabric, modal is used by small and large designers and manufacturers alike. Organic Wool Organic wool comes from sheep that are raised according to ethical and environmental standards—without hormones or synthetic antibiotics and with humane treatment that includes access to outdoor pasture. To receive certification, organic wool must come from sheep raised according to the federal standards for organic livestock. Recycled Products Using recycled, refurbished and reused products helps to preserve our environment and support our economy. You not only save new resources from being harvested and utilized, but you also prevent furthering our refuse impact on the Earth. Silk Cruelty-free silk allows wild and semi-wild silkworms to emerge from their cocoons before the silk is harvested, rather than killing them. Surplus & Recycled Fabrics and Materials Surplus and recycled fabrics include leathers, woods, papers, metals and other materials that would otherwise become trash. Through surplus and recycled fabrics, an unwanted leather jacket becomes a hot new purse and an old glass bottle becomes a beautiful piece of jewelry—amazing buys for the eco-chic. Sustainable Organic Cotton Organic cotton is good for both the earth and your skin. With growing methods and materials that minimally impact the environment, organic cotton production helps reduce the use of toxic pesticides and fertilizers in our ecosystem. Additionally, by wearing clothing made of organic cotton, you can rest assured that the material contains no harmful chemicals to come in contact with your skin. Organic growers further help replenish and maintain soil fertility while building biologically diverse agriculture. To receive certification, organic cotton producers must pass third-party verification to confirm that their methods and materials are safe and earth friendly. Tencel® (lyocell) Tencel®, a by-product of hardwood trees, was the first cellulose-based textile product. Its environmentally friendly production process was additionally awarded the European ECO Award. Not only is Tencel® 100% biodegradable and machine washable, the fabric is exceptionally comfortable to wear. Similar to bamboo, it is cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Vegetable dyes Many of our products are made using vegetable dyes. Vegetable dyes are an earth-friendly alternative to synthetic dyes. They are “greener” in their processing and development, less harsh on the fabric and the wearer, and biodegradable. If you would like more information about any of the materials or processes used in the development of the products offered on our website, please contact us at customerservice@shopmodify.com.
